Quotes and Dialogue

When something is drilled into me, such as a rule, idea, or theory, I tend to stick to it pretty stubbornly. I was taught in my early English and Grammar classes that when you are writing dialogue, each person's speech is a new paragraph. Like a script.

For Example:

"Hi Jane."
"Hello there, Sam."

I'm assuming that is grammatically correct.

Some authors that I have read, have broken this rule. The conversation still flows well and the structure of the paragraph seems to stay intact. Is this a kind of statement? Or their artistic right? Or just their style? Does it mean that they don't understand grammar? What about the editor's of their work? Do they have something to say about it?

I'm pretty sure these questions wouldn't have right or wrong answers but i'm just curious about other author's use of quotations and dialogue structure.

update and changes

oh well hello again...

I was talking to a friend last night who informed me that I had to update my blog more often. Let me explain what has been going on lately with all this blog stuff....

The blog started out as a way for me to communicate with my friends back home and to keep them updated on what was going on while I was away at school. It was also meant to get me writing more often and express myself. As the new year came around I realized that I wanted to do more than just rant and explain on my blog. I didn't want it JUST to be about my life. The blog seemed kind of counter productive for a while. I put the project on hold to get stuff sorted out.

I will probably still use the blog but it will go through a few changes. Firstly, It will be for me. You are welcome to look and comment of course but I will be using the blog to express my feelings and my inner thoughts. I may do some censoring but for  the most part be prepared to have a pretty intimate experience with this blog. I will also be posting journal entries from my English classes. These will include thoughts on stories I have read, creative pieces I have written, and other responses to miscellaneous stimuli.

Another major thing happening is that with the New Year I finally decided to write a novel. I currently have a good chunk of it mapped out and I am using the writing prompts from class to add some flair to it as well. I'm pretty excited for this endeavor and with each snippet I write and have critiqued I get a new burst of motivation. For once in my life I feel like I could actually create, mold, finish, and publish a long piece such as this. I will probably post some of the snippets on here and i will tag them as so so that you can see what I am working on.

If you have any criticism or advice for any of the writings I post on here PLEASE comment or talk to me! I would love to hear it! I am always looking for ways to improve my writing.

It's amazing what a week can do for you.

Life hasn't been that stressful to be honest. I had a pretty easy semester and everything ran smoothly. But i just got a complete reload over this weekend.

I got to spend the weekend with my mom's side of the family and it was amazing! Almost the whole family was there. it would have been nice to see my Aunt Tammy, Uncle Jamie and Grandma Judy but we had a good turn out nonetheless. Everyone made the effort to make it and to come and it was great to see everyone.

I even got to spend a few extra days with my cousin at her place after the weekend.

It's just been a great week. it was so good to see everyone and to talk and catch up on stuff. I love my family. they really are there for you no matter what. I couldn't have asked for a better (or crazier) family than this one.

Thanks to you all for being so awesome and making this weekend spectacular!

negativity is a creepin

So in the past week or so 2 of the most negative people in my life have tried to contact me on facebook. I'm not really sure why either. A part of me thinks that they have ulterior motives. The other part of me thinks that maybe they are sorry or have changed and want to make amends.

Well the whole of me says... Why should I even bother with you? Reforging our relationships even in a minute way will not add anything to my life and may, in fact, hurt me (again) in the end.

I've considered rekindling the friendships that we had. I've talked it over with those I trust. The conclusion is always that it is not worth my time. I have built an amazing future for myself and by no means do I intend to ruin that. I've worked so hard to get where I am. I have stumbled, cried and picked myself up again to carry on.
I don't need you weighing me down.

A little story for you

Hello again!

Today I have a little story for you. This was an assignment for my Children’s Literature class. We had been talking about religious stories and how there were several different versions of those stories depending on the author, age group and other things.  We were told to write our own version of Noah’s Ark for a particular age group. I chose to write for a group of 8-10 year olds. I’m posting this on here because my teacher really liked it (yes, I have gold star syndrome) and I am particularly proud of it.

Grampa Noah’s Story

Gather ‘round and let me tell of the day God told me to build an ark. Y’see, times had gotten quite rotten and God had it made up that he would make it right again. So he told yer Grampa Noah to build and build and gather and gather. So that I did! Two by two they came. Yer pa’s, they helped me lots they did! When the doors closed the rain did start a-pourin’! Yer lovely gramama and ma’s, theycooked might good meals fer forty days and forty nights. Mighty good meals! Then at last the did stop and yer grampa Noah sent out a rave. That bugger came back empty-beaked he did! So the next week yer grampa Noah sent out a pretty lil dove and he brought back a bright green olive branch! Ooohhh how we danced and praised God! We landed the next week and what d’ya know?! There was a band o’ color in the sky. God’s promise, y’see, that a flood like that would never happen again. Now off to yer chores youngins!

Hahaha now I’m completely embarrassed but I hope you enjoyed it anyways.

New place

I moved into my new place on Sunday. It actually didn't take as long as I thought it would to move in. I only have one room but still it only took about 4-5 hours. Which isn't bad at all! I'm pretty excited about the place. I will be living with Ward, the home owner, and his two Pomeranians. He is looking for a third roommate right now and then we'll be spiffy!
